For many Americans, Memorial Day marks the unofficial start of summer.
Barbecues. Road trips. Family gatherings. A long weekend away from work.
But behind all of that is something far more important.
Memorial Day exists because hundreds of thousands of Americans never came home.
They gave their lives in service to this country — many of them young, many with families waiting for them, many believing they were protecting something larger than themselves.
That sacrifice deserves more than a passing thought once a year.
Freedom Was Never Free
Every generation of Americans has benefited from sacrifices made by previous generations.
The ability to speak freely. Build businesses. Raise families. Own homes. Work hard and create a better future.
None of those things simply appeared out of nowhere.
They were protected — often at an enormous cost.
Memorial Day is not about politics. It is not about partisan arguments. It is not about proving who is more patriotic.
It is about remembering the Americans who lost everything in service to the country they believed in.
The Country They Defended Still Matters
One of the most important ways we honor previous generations is by refusing to become cynical about America itself.
This country is not perfect. It never has been.
But generations of Americans still believed it was worth defending. Worth protecting. Worth rebuilding. Worth fighting for.
That belief built factories, communities, infrastructure, small businesses, neighborhoods, and opportunities that shaped the lives of millions of families.
And while America faces real challenges today, Memorial Day is a reminder that previous generations faced enormous challenges too.
They endured wars, economic hardship, uncertainty, and sacrifice — yet still believed the country had a future worth building.
A Day To Remember
Today, take a moment to think about the Americans who never got to come home to:
- their spouses
- their children
- their parents
- their hometowns
- the lives they hoped to build
Because for many families, Memorial Day is not symbolic.
It is deeply personal.
And maybe the best way to honor that sacrifice is to never take this country for granted.
Not its freedoms. Not its opportunities. Not the people who built it. And not the people who gave everything defending it.
From all of us at Buy American Campaign: Thank you to the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for the United States of America.
Never forgotten.
