Company details
Where WSI Sportswear products are made
“Every garment is cut and sewn in Minnesota, USA,” on both product pages sampled for this profile — a SoftTECH tee and a HYPRTECH BAMBOO brief.
The company describes a single Eagan site for “design, production, shipping,” where designs are printed in-house, then cut, sewn and shipped. “The people who make the gear are just down the hall.”
“The majority of our materials are sourced in the USA.” Majority, not all — the garment manufacturing is domestic; some fabric inputs may not be.
What this emblem covers. WSI Sportswear states that every garment is cut and sewn in Minnesota and marks this on its product pages. The emblem covers WSI-made garments. Its materials are majority US-sourced, by its own account. The OCIANA brand and accessory items without a product-page origin statement are not covered.
The story
WSI’s own shorthand for its history is “From Mom’s kitchen table to the world’s top athletes.” Joel Wiens founded the company in 1990, and it has made its apparel in Minnesota since.
It developed its own performance fabrics — SoftTECH, Microtech, HYPRTECH BAMBOO and HEATR — for base layers, cold-weather gear and everyday athletic wear, and tests them where it makes them, in Minnesota winters.
Wiens gives the reason the company never moved production offshore in one line: “We chose to keep making it here, because some things are worth the cost.”
Why they matter
Athletic apparel is almost entirely made overseas. WSI keeps the whole process — printing, cutting, sewing and shipping — in one building in Eagan.
That is a choice with a price tag, and the founder says as much. It also means small runs, team orders and custom work can be made close to the customer.
The claim on its product pages is unqualified about where garments are made and honest about fabric, which is the right way round.
