The story
Sterilite began in 1939, when Saul and Edward Stone went into partnership with Earl Tupper — a name that would later become far more famous attached to a different company — to explore what injection moulding could do. Their first effort, manufacturing plastic shoe heels, did not last, but the tooling knowledge did.
The Second World War turned that knowledge into a business. The company shifted to producing essential plastic goods for the Armed Forces, and came out of the war with real expertise in moulding at volume. That capability, rather than any single product, is what the modern Sterilite is built on.
Through the postwar decades the product line followed American households as they changed. Toys and tabletop items gave way to beverageware, and by the 1960s Sterilite was selling a broad line of plastic housewares including early food storage and one of its first storage bins — the ancestor of the category the company now dominates.
Today Sterilite makes storage containers, wastebaskets, laundry and utility products, kitchen solutions, garage storage and office organization, from seven plants and over 12 million square feet of production space.
