What this emblem covers. Rosenbauer states “Made in the USA — trusted worldwide” for its three US plants as a group. The parent company, Rosenbauer International AG, is Austrian — under the campaign’s manufacturing-first standard, ownership is disclosed but does not change eligibility; what qualifies the company is that its fire apparatus is verifiably built at these three US plants.

The story

Rosenbauer America’s South Dakota roots go back to Lyons Garage in the 1970s, which grew into Central States Fire Apparatus, founded by local residents Harold and Helen Boer — reportedly built for their own volunteer fire department before becoming a full manufacturer.

Rosenbauer International AG, an Austrian fire-equipment manufacturer, later built out US operations to include the Lyons, South Dakota plant alongside facilities in Wyoming, Minnesota and Fremont, Nebraska, each specializing in a different part of the fire-apparatus line.

Why they matter

The Lyons, South Dakota plant alone employs close to 400 manufacturing workers in a town with a nighttime population of about 75 — turning it into a daytime population of over 450 — and the South Dakota operations produce roughly 500 fire trucks and rescue vehicles a month.

A foreign-owned company that chooses to keep building its US-market fire trucks at US plants, rather than importing them, keeps that production and those jobs in South Dakota, Minnesota and Nebraska.
