Check the label

Some Pyrex accessory items have been sourced from China — confirm country of origin per item.

US ‘Pyrex’ (capital P, tempered soda-lime glass) is American-made and distinct from the European ‘pyrex’ (borosilicate, made in France). The FTC has flagged that some individual Pyrex items were made in China, so check the label on a specific product.

The story

Pyrex has been an American kitchen fixture since 1915, when Corning Glass Works turned its heat-resistant laboratory glass into clear, oven-safe bakeware. For decades, US Pyrex was made at the glassworks in Charleroi, Pennsylvania — a plant whose roots reach back to the 1890s. A distinction trips up many shoppers: US Pyrex (capital P) is tempered soda-lime glass, while the lowercase ‘pyrex’ sold across Europe is a different borosilicate product made in France by a separate company.

The American line went through turbulent ownership. After Instant Brands filed for bankruptcy in 2023, Centre Lane Partners — which also owns Anchor Hocking — bought the housewares division and renamed it Corelle Brands. In April 2025 the historic Charleroi plant closed after 132 years, and US Pyrex production was consolidated into Anchor Hocking’s Lancaster, Ohio glass plant. The classic US bakeware remains American-made, but buyers should still check labels.

Same name, different glass: US Pyrex is tempered soda-lime; European pyrex is French borosilicate.

Why they matter
