The story
Pelican began in 1976 in a Torrance garage, where diver David Parker built a marker buoy and then a waterproof case for the dive market. Customers kept repurposing those crushproof, dustproof cases to protect other gear, and ‘put it in a Pelican’ became shorthand for indestructible.
Today Pelican still molds its signature cases on American soil. The Torrance plant runs around the clock with 22 injection-molding machines, pairing automated molding with hand assembly of latches, hinges and gaskets. A 2009 acquisition of Hardigg Industries added the South Deerfield, Massachusetts plant for heavy military and industrial cases.
‘Put it in a Pelican’ became shorthand for indestructible.
Why they matter
Protective cases are widely imported, so a maker that molds at scale in California and Massachusetts is worth supporting.
Buying Pelican’s US-made cases and coolers backs two American molding plants and the workers who hand-assemble them.
