Where Libbey glassware is made

Libbey’s flagship glass plant and headquarters sit in Toledo, Ohio — a city so tied to the industry it earned the nickname “The Glass City.” Libbey has produced glass in Toledo since 1888, with additional American glass manufacturing in Shreveport, Louisiana. One honest note: not everything sold under the broader Libbey umbrella is domestic. Libbey imports some specialty items and sells through a Mexican subsidiary (Crisa). The products we feature are specifically the American-made Libbey glassware — the tumblers, rocks glasses, wine glasses, beer glasses, and foodservice lines produced in its U.S. plants.

The story

Libbey traces its roots to the New England Glass Company, founded in 1818 near Boston. In 1888, Edward Drummond Libbey moved the operation to Toledo to be closer to cheap natural gas and quality sand — a bet that helped turn Toledo into the center of American glassmaking.

More than two centuries later, Libbey is still at it. Its pressed soda-lime glass has become the default in American restaurants and bars precisely because it holds up: heavy bases, balanced weight, and shapes that survive high-volume use and dishwasher after dishwasher.

Why they matter

Libbey is a rare thing — a legacy American manufacturer that still makes an everyday product at scale, here at home. Choosing its U.S.-made glassware supports glassmaking jobs in Toledo and Shreveport and keeps a 200-year-old craft alive. It is also just practical: American-made Libbey glass is durable, affordable, and easy to replace piece by piece.
