Some imports

A smaller number of specialty and newer-category tools are imported — check the product label.

Klein Tools is a mixed-origin brand: most of its hand tools are US-made but some specialty and newer items are imported. When a Klein product says ‘Made in the USA,’ it meets the FTC standard — always check the individual product’s country-of-origin label.

The story

Klein Tools traces back to 1857, when German immigrant Mathias Klein forged a replacement half for a lineman’s broken pliers in his small Chicago shop. That repair became the first Klein pliers, and the company grew up alongside America’s telegraph, telephone and electrical industries.

Six generations later it’s still owned and run by the Klein family — one of the rare hand-tool makers that never closed a US factory to chase cheaper labor overseas. Klein keeps the large majority of its tools in American plants in Texas, Illinois, Arkansas and New York, and has pledged more than $100 million in further US investment.

Six generations on, Klein has never closed a US factory to move work overseas.

Why they matter

Klein is candid that not every SKU is American-made — some specialty tools are imported — so we promote it honestly, tool by tool, and celebrate the US-made workhorses that built the brand.

Backing Klein’s American-made lines is a direct vote for the more than a dozen US plants and the reshoring investment the company has pledged.

Frequently asked questions

Are all Klein Tools made in the USA?

No — but most are. The large majority of Klein’s hand tools are made in American plants, while a smaller number of specialty and newer items are imported. Always check the individual product’s country-of-origin label.

Which Klein products are made in America?

Core lines like pliers, screwdrivers, nut drivers, wire strippers, fish tapes, construction wrenches and leather/canvas goods are made at US plants in Texas, Illinois, Arkansas and New York.

Why promote a brand that imports some tools?

Because Klein genuinely manufactures at scale in the USA — ’14 times more product here than in any other country’ by its own account — has never closed a US plant, and is investing over $100 million to reshore more.
