Globally sourced botanicals
Candelilla wax is wild-grown in Mexico and some plant oils come from overseas growers — the ingredients travel, the manufacturing does not.
Hurraw! manufactures its balms in its own certified facility in Montana. Because several botanical ingredients — most notably its candelilla wax — are sourced outside the United States, we describe Hurraw! as American manufacturing rather than making a full “Made in USA” claim on its behalf.
The story
Hurraw! has been making balm since 2010 under a slogan that reads like a rebuke of the rest of the beauty industry: “It’s not about us.” The company’s stated priority is to make the finest balm available and to put the concept ahead of the profit — which, in practice, has meant refusing to hand production to someone else.
That decision is the unusual part. Most independent cosmetics brands are marketing companies that hire a contract manufacturer to fill their tubes. Hurraw! develops and produces in a dedicated facility it controls, which is what makes its certifications possible: it has been a USDA National Organic Program certified organic handler and producer since 2015, audited in person every year by the Montana Department of Agriculture, and Ecocert COSMOS certified since 2017.
The company is also candid about what it cannot certify. Its balms are not labeled 95%+ organic because candelilla wax — wild-grown in Mexico and not organic-certifiable — and its flavors sit outside the standard. That kind of disclosure is rare enough in natural beauty to be worth noting.
Some ingredients are closer to home than others: the hemp flower oil in its balms is grown and pressed in Montana by Montana Hemp Company, one of the few organic hemp growers in the state.
Why they matter
Personal care is one of the most thoroughly outsourced categories in American retail. The label on the tube tells you who designed the brand, not who made the product, and the answer is usually a contract manufacturer several time zones away.
Hurraw! is a working counterexample at small scale: a certified vegan, certified organic-handling manufacturer in a town of a few thousand people in northwest Montana, with the audits and paperwork to prove where the work happens.
