Hard-coat anodizing

The anodizing is the expensive step and the reason the panels do not rust — and it is done domestically rather than offshore.

A rail-and-floor design

Raised rails sit on a solid floor so fat drips onto the floor instead of the coals, vaporizes, and goes back into the food rather than igniting under it.

GrillGrate panels are manufactured and hard-anodized in Cartersville, Georgia. The company is candid that producing in Georgia — and hard-coat anodizing in particular — costs more than importing would.

The story

GrillGrate exists because one man got tired of ruining dinner. Brad Barrett was sick of flare-ups scorching steaks and of fish welding itself to the bars of his grill.

His fix was a panel of raised rails sitting on a solid floor: fat drips onto the floor instead of the coals, vaporizes, and goes back into the food rather than igniting under it. He patented it, and started making it in Georgia in 2007.

The company is candid that making it in Georgia costs more than importing it would, and that hard-coat anodizing costs more again. Their argument is the one every company on this site eventually makes: build it well enough that the customer only has to buy it once.

Why they matter

Most grill accessories are landfill in waiting — thin stamped steel that rusts through after a season or two.

GrillGrate is a small American manufacturer that solved a real problem, patented it, and then declined to offshore it — in a category where nearly everything on the shelf is imported.

Keeping the anodizing domestic is the part that matters most: it is the costliest step and the easiest one to send abroad, and it is what makes the panels last.

Frequently asked questions

Where is GrillGrate made?

In Cartersville, Georgia, where the company has been based since Brad Barrett founded it in 2007. The hard-anodizing is also done domestically.

What does the rail-and-floor design actually do?

Fat drips onto the solid floor beneath the rails instead of falling onto the coals. It vaporizes there and returns to the food, which prevents flare-ups and stops delicate foods sticking to bare grill bars.

Why is GrillGrate more expensive than a standard grate?

Hard-coat anodizing is a costly process and the company does it in the United States. That is what keeps the panels from rusting.
