The story
Filson was born in 1897 when Clinton C. Filson opened his Pioneer Alaska Clothing and Blanket Manufacturers to outfit prospectors streaming through Seattle toward the Klondike Gold Rush. When the gold faded, the rugged Mackinaw wool coats, tin-cloth pants and bridle-leather-trimmed bags found a second life with loggers, hunters and anglers. For more than a century, ‘Made in Seattle’ was central to the Filson legend, and the brand became shorthand for buy-it-for-life American workwear.
That heritage is still real, but for a Buy-American shopper it now needs an asterisk. Under current ownership (Bedrock Manufacturing Co.), Filson has moved much of its production offshore and to outside contractors — the company itself says US-made product dropped from roughly 90% in 2015 to about 35% in 2025. The brand still makes select flagship pieces domestically, including limited-run Filson Workshop goods. The honest approach is to highlight the specific items Filson labels Made in USA, rather than treating the whole catalog as American-made.

Why they matter
American apparel manufacturing is rare, so the US-made flagship pieces Filson still produces are worth seeking out.
Buying Filson’s labeled Made-in-USA items supports the remaining American craftspeople behind the brand.
