Where Crazy Aaron’s products are made
Norristown, Pennsylvania
Thinking Putty is mixed, colored, portioned and tinned at the company’s own Pennsylvania facility — start to finish, not assembled from imported stock.
Its own formulas
Silicone-based putty that never dries out, in proprietary blends that glow, change color with heat, respond to magnets or carry a scent.
Built to employ
The production process was deliberately designed so that people with disabilities could do the work. Hundreds have been hired on that basis.

The story
Aaron Muderick was a software engineer who started messing with silicone putty as a hobby, mixing small batches by hand. In 1998 the hobby became a company. Nearly thirty years later Crazy Aaron’s sells more than fifty colors and effects, runs a flagship store in Norristown, and is stocked by specialty toy shops across the country.
What kept it here is the formula. The putty is the company’s own chemistry — heat-sensitive, magnetic, glow-in-the-dark, scented — and the recipes are not something you hand to a contract manufacturer overseas. Keeping the mixing in Pennsylvania is both a business decision and the reason nobody has successfully knocked it off.
A software engineer’s hobby that became a Pennsylvania factory — and a job program.
Why they matter
Toys are one of the most thoroughly offshored categories in American retail. The overwhelming majority of what fills a toy aisle is made abroad, and has been for decades. A tin of Thinking Putty is a small, genuine exception — an American-made toy at a price that competes with imported ones.
The employment piece is what makes it unusual. Crazy Aaron’s did not simply hire people with disabilities into an existing line; it developed production methods so the work would fit them. That is domestic manufacturing doing something an offshore contract could not do at all — putting specific people in a specific town to work.
