Crayola’s crayons and markers are made in the USA in Pennsylvania’s Lehigh Valley. Its colored pencils are manufactured in Brazil, Costa Rica or Vietnam, and some other products come from Canada and Mexico — so the US-made badge applies to the crayons-and-markers core.
The story
Crayola’s story begins in 1885, when Edwin Binney and his cousin C. Harold Smith formed Binney & Smith. In 1903 they introduced the first box of eight Crayola crayons, priced at a nickel. The name came from Edwin’s wife Alice, who blended ‘craie’ — the French word for chalk — with a root meaning ‘oily,’ capturing exactly what a crayon is. More than 120 years later, the brand remains synonymous with childhood color.
That heritage is still rooted in Pennsylvania’s Lehigh Valley, where Crayola makes nearly 3 billion crayons and millions of markers every year. The company has notably kept these crown-jewel products on American soil rather than outsourcing them. Some lines do travel — Crayola’s colored pencils, for instance, are made in Brazil, Costa Rica and Vietnam — but the iconic crayons and markers that define the brand are still made in the USA.
Nearly 3 billion crayons a year — about 13 million a day — still made in Pennsylvania.
