One complete system

The only manufacturer offering a full system of cast iron, PVC, CPVC, ABS and FlowGuard Gold — every piece of it made domestically.

Charlotte Pipe and Foundry states that all of its products are made in the USA, in eight company plants. Cast iron has been poured in North Carolina since 1901; plastics have been manufactured domestically since 1967.

The story

In 1901, W. Frank Dowd built a small foundry in Charlotte, North Carolina, and started pouring cast iron pipe. His son took over in 1926; his grandsons mechanized the foundry in the 1950s; and in 1967 the company moved into plastics without ever leaving iron behind. Today Charlotte Pipe is run by the fifth generation of the same family, and it is still private — no public shareholders, no outside owners.

That continuity shows up in the products. Charlotte Pipe is one of the largest American makers of both cast iron and plastic pipe, and the only manufacturer that offers a complete system — cast iron, PVC, CPVC, ABS and FlowGuard Gold — engineered to work together. The company manufactures for inventory rather than to order, which is why a contractor can generally get what the job needs when the job needs it.

“Remain a private, patriotic family-owned company, as we have been since our founding in 1901.” — Charlotte Pipe company values

Why they matter

This is the American manufacturing story you never see. Charlotte Pipe products live inside walls and under slabs — the drain, waste and vent systems that carry water away from millions of homes, hospitals, schools and commercial buildings. Nobody photographs their plumbing. But it is the part of a building you least want to fail, and it is being made by Americans in eight domestic plants.

Plenty of manufacturers moved this category offshore. Charlotte Pipe did the opposite: it built a brand-new foundry in Oakboro, North Carolina in 2023 and kept reinvesting in domestic capacity. Every one of those plants sustains jobs in the towns around it — which is precisely the kind of decision this campaign exists to point at.
