The story
Bob’s Red Mill grew out of one couple’s conviction that whole grains are worth doing the slow way. After Bob Moore taught himself the nearly lost craft of stone milling — even tracking down traditional quartz millstones from defunct mills — he and his wife Charlee opened Bob’s Red Mill Natural Foods in Milwaukie, Oregon in 1978.
What sets the company apart is how it mills and who owns it. Bob’s still grinds whole grains on slow-turning quartz millstones, which keep the bran and germ in the flour rather than stripping them out. On his 81st birthday in 2010, Bob Moore gave the company to the people who built it through an Employee Stock Ownership Plan; it became 100% employee-owned by 2020.

Why they matter
Milled grains and baking staples are a category where origin is rarely advertised, so an Oregon stone mill is worth highlighting.
