Our assessment

Filter media is bulky, cheap polyester — exactly the product that migrates offshore. Aquatic Experts instead states plainly why it does not: “The majority of our products are made in the USA which gives us the ability to maintain our high level of quality and to support US factories.” Six of its filter-pad and pond-media products carry a “Made in the USA” sentence in the body copy of its own site. Two things keep the label at American Manufacturing: that company-wide sentence is hedged to “the majority,” and the company does not operate a plant — its own copy reads “PROUDLY MADE IN THE USA for Aquatic Experts.”
Six products claimed on-site
ClassicBlue bonded pad, FilterFirst floss, carbon pad and all three koi pond pads carry a Made-in-the-USA sentence in their own body copy
“To support US factories”
“The majority of our products are made in the USA which gives us the ability to maintain our high level of quality and to support US factories”
Cut to fit, not cartridges
Sold as bulk rolls up to 24 feet — “Use this in place of an expensive filter pad”

Where Aquatic Experts products are made

Resin bonding is the core process, and the pigment is bound into it
“Pads are constructed of durable polyester fibers bonded by our special resin to give the media exceptional strength,” with the claim that the pad has “the STRENGTH TO LAST TWICE AS LONG as the rest.” The colour is engineered rather than applied: “Blue pigment is added to our POLY FILTER PAD to holdfast resin to keep the color on the pad and out of your aquarium water,” and the company notes “we mix our dye with waterproof glue not water-resistant glue.”
True dual density, in one pad rather than two stacked
FilterFirst is “this unique 2 Layers in 1 filter media pad” where “The top layer’s open fiber construction traps LARGER PARTICLES while the bottom layer’s dense fiber network TRAPS FINER PARTICLES” — and it is made dye-free, “Made without dyes in USA!” Orientation therefore matters: the company instructs that water “should flow through the looser fiber side of our FilterFirst pad first.”
Graded micron ratings and specified thicknesses across the line
Polishing pads are offered at 50, 100 and 200 micron; the carbon pad is 3/8 to 1/2 inch thick; the bonded pad is 3/4 inch; the two-inch cream pond pad is deliberately thick so that “our thick pond filter material allows for high water flow through the filter pad to trap waste and debris without premature clogging.” The black pond pad gets its durability from a separate coating step: “The filter pad is black from a thick coating Of latex which gives it strength and durability.”

American Manufacturing is the accurate label, for two reasons the company states itself. First, the claim is real and on its own site — six filter-pad and pond-media products carry an unambiguous “Made in the USA” sentence in visible body copy, so this is not recycled marketplace text. Second, Aquatic Experts is a brand that has US factories build media to its specification rather than a company operating its own plant: its copy reads “PROUDLY MADE IN THE USA for Aquatic Experts,” and its only company-wide statement is hedged to “the majority of our products.” We therefore exclude, by name, the felt filter socks, the polishing pads, the mesh media bags and the liquid water treatments — on those, “Made in the USA” appears only in image alt text while the visible copy is silent, and alt text is not evidence. Nothing on the site is stated to be imported.

The story

The company is the third act of one man’s career in the same trade. Owner Laurren Schmoyer “worked in a pet store during his high school years,” and “His love for animals prompted his study in Biology at University of North Carolina at Greensboro.” He then “opened an aquarium service company and began servicing aquariums in the Greensboro, NC area” — the city the company still operates from.

Retail came next, and then he left it. He “opened a small aquarium store, Aquamain’s Fish World, which grew into one of the largest aquarium stores on the east coast,” and “After 25 years, Laurren left his retail store but kept his aquarium service division which installed and maintained freshwater, saltwater and reef aquariums in homes and offices.” Finally he “decided to put his focus and energy into growing Aquatic Experts and sold his service company Elite Aquarium Services to his capable head technician.”

The product philosophy is stated as a testing loop rather than a catalogue: “When a great product is discovered, we test it, improve on it if possible, and only then offer the proven product to our clients.” The filter socks are made only “when our factory receives our exact specifications; YEARS OF TESTING produced the perfect blueprint.” The company also publishes hobbyist books and a learning centre.

Why they matter

This keeps American textile-media production employed in a category that has almost entirely gone offshore. Aquarium filter media is low-cost, high-volume, bulky polyester — the classic migration candidate — and Aquatic Experts says it buys from US plants specifically to hold quality. Greensboro sits in the historic Piedmont textile belt, which makes the sourcing choice geographically coherent rather than a slogan.

Bulk cut-to-fit rolls are an argument against the disposable cartridge. The whole line is sold as rolls the hobbyist cuts to size, designed to be rinsed and reused — the polishing pad is “durable enough to be cleaned in a washing machine.” That is a US-made consumable winning on cost-per-use against imported proprietary cartridges, which is the rare case where domestic production wins on price in practice.

And the specification was written by an operator rather than a marketer. Someone who ran an aquarium store and a service company for twenty-five years wrote the spec his factory now builds to. For a Buy American audience that is the durable version of domestic sourcing: a US factory holding a spec that a knowledgeable buyer defined.

Aquatic Experts questions

Is Aquatic Experts filter media made in the USA?

Yes, for the filter pad and pond media lines. Aquatic Experts states “Made in the USA” in the product copy on its own website for its ClassicBlue bonded aquarium pad, its FilterFirst dual-density floss (“Made without dyes in USA!”), its carbon-infused pad and all three koi pond media pads. Company-wide it says “The majority of our products are made in the USA,” which is a deliberate hedge — the felt filter socks, polishing pads, mesh bags and liquid water treatments carry no origin statement in their page copy, so we treat those as unverified rather than assuming they match the pads. The pads are built by US factories to Aquatic Experts’ own specifications; the company describes this as choosing to “support US factories.”

Where is Aquatic Experts based?

Greensboro, North Carolina. The company publishes “Aquatic Experts, Inc., 422 N Chimney Rock Road, Greensboro, NC 27410” as its return address, and lists a second Greensboro address in its privacy policy. Despite the aquarium trade’s heavy Florida presence, this is a North Carolina company — founder Laurren Schmoyer studied biology at UNC Greensboro and started his first aquarium service business in the Greensboro area.

When was Aquatic Experts founded?

Aquatic Experts does not publish a founding year, so we do not state one. What the company does publish is career context for its owner: Laurren Schmoyer ran an aquarium retail store and a separate aquarium service company for over twenty-five years before turning his focus to Aquatic Experts, and the site notes he has been “in the industry for over 30 years.”

What is dual density media, and why does it matter?

Dual density means one pad does two filtration jobs in a single pass. The FilterFirst pad is “this unique 2 Layers in 1 filter media pad” where “The top layer’s open fiber construction traps LARGER PARTICLES while the bottom layer’s dense fiber network TRAPS FINER PARTICLES.” Orientation is therefore not optional — the company instructs that water “should flow through the looser fiber side of our FilterFirst pad first,” so debris is caught before it reaches the tight layer and clogs it. The same logic governs layering separate pads: run water through a bonded pad first and then a polishing pad, and the company says the polishing pad goes from clogging “as quickly as 24 hours” to lasting “1 to 2 weeks before cleaning is required.”
