The story

Duke’s began in 1917, when Eugenia Duke of Greenville, South Carolina, made sandwiches in her home kitchen to sell to soldiers at Camp Sevier during World War I. They cost a dime each, and the mayonnaise was what people remembered.

Years after they left the camp, soldiers were still writing to ask for her recipes. In 1929, with demand more than she could handle alone, Eugenia Duke sold the business to The C.F. Sauer Company of Richmond, Virginia, and stayed on as its chief salesperson.

Sauer, now Sauer Brands, still makes the flagship mayonnaise to Eugenia’s original recipe in Greenville.

Why they matter

Duke’s is a regional food that became a national one without leaving the South. The mayonnaise is still made in the city where it started.

A century-old recipe, still made in the same South Carolina city, is exactly the kind of American production the Buy American Campaign likes to point buyers toward.
