Our assessment

SallyeAnder describes a plant rather than a partner: “SallyeAnder’s micro-factory in the Hudson Valley of New York produces thousands of all-natural, purposefully formulated utility soaps, bug repellent … and body care.” The No-Bite-Me cream goes further — “Everything we make is 100% handmade in the USA from organic ingredients.”
A micro-factory
The company’s own word for its Hudson Valley production — not a co-packer, and no contract manufacturer appears anywhere on the site
Since 1982

Ingredients travel
Red clay is “imported from the South of France in the Provence area,” by the company’s own ingredient list

Where SallyeAnder products are made

A micro-factory, named as such
“SallyeAnder’s micro-factory in the Hudson Valley of New York produces thousands of all-natural, purposefully formulated utility soaps, bug repellent (the WORLD’s best), and body care.” Elsewhere the company refers to “our workshop” and “our soap-making facility.” No contract manufacturer appears anywhere on the site.
Two products say it outright
Black Soap is “crafted with care in Beacon, New York … right here in New York’s Hudson River Valley.” The No-Bite-Me bug repellent cream carries the full promise: “Since 1982, we’ve been a small family-owned and operated business … Everything we make is 100% handmade in the USA from organic ingredients.”
Thin per-product coverage, and one named import
Eight of ten product pages sampled carried no origin line, including all three creams and balms checked. And the ingredient list is explicit about one import: “We use red clay imported from the South of France in the Provence area.” Local sourcing is named where it exists — goat milk from Edgwick Farm twenty minutes away, organic cornmeal from Wild Hive Farm.

American Manufacturing fits a company that makes its own goods in the United States but states the claim at company level rather than on every product, and names at least one imported ingredient. SallyeAnder does all three, and this profile reports the claim at the strength the company actually gives it.

The story

The name is not a surname. Gary Austin was, the company says, “inspired by the resourcefulness and practicality of his childhood neighbor and mentor, ‘SallyeAnder’.”

The business began in a kitchen with a specific problem. “Our cozy family kitchen became a sanctuary of innovation and love as my father crafted the first-ever soap bars … provided relief for my brother’s sensitive skin,” writes Sallie Austin. Karen Austin took them to farmers’ markets — still a channel the company works, in Pleasantville and Park Slope — alongside its own shop, Camp Cornwall, at 262 Main Street in Cornwall, New York.

It is now second-generation. Sallie Austin is chief executive; Gary and Karen Austin are still on the team page with their own product picks. The formulation rules are stated as hard constraints rather than marketing: no coconut or palm oil at all, because “with repeated use, these oils can actually be astringent to your skin,” plus no animal testing, artificial dyes, foaming agents or sulfates.

Why they matter

Natural soap is a category with a very large gap between the artisanal story on the label and the contract plant that actually pours the batch. Much of what looks handmade is not.

SallyeAnder names its own facility, its own town, and the farms twenty minutes away that supply its goat milk. It also names the French clay it imports, which is the detail a company inventing a story would leave out.

The per-product evidence is thinner than the company-level claim, and that is recorded here rather than glossed. But a forty-year-old family business still selling at farmers’ markets and running a shop on Main Street is about as close to the stated story as this category gets.

SallyeAnder questions

Is SallyeAnder made in the USA?

The company says so at company level: its “micro-factory in the Hudson Valley of New York produces thousands of all-natural … utility soaps, bug repellent … and body care,” and the No-Bite-Me cream page reads “Everything we make is 100% handmade in the USA from organic ingredients.” Two of ten product pages sampled carried an explicit origin line, so the claim here is recorded at company level.

Where is SallyeAnder based?

Beacon, New York. “Our headquarters reside in the Hudson River town of Beacon, nestled in the breathtaking Hudson Valley.” No street address is published; the company also runs a shop, Camp Cornwall, at 262 Main Street, Cornwall, New York.

Are the ingredients American?

Some are named as local — goat milk from Edgwick Farm about twenty minutes away, organic cornmeal from Wild Hive Farm. One is named as imported: “We use red clay imported from the South of France in the Provence area.” The company does not claim domestic ingredients across the board, and neither does this profile.

What is not in SallyeAnder soap?

Coconut and palm oil, deliberately: “SallyeAnder NEVER uses coconut or palm oil. With repeated use, these oils can actually be astringent to your skin.” Also no animal testing, artificial dyes, foaming agents or sulfates. The base is an olive and vegetable oil blend.
