Where Scotty Cameron products are made
“Each putter is milled in California from a solid block of 303 Stainless Steel.” The stated reason for milling rather than casting is fitting tolerance: “If you try and bend the neck of a casting more than three degrees you probably end up snapping the neck.” A milled neck can be bent to a player’s lie angle. A cast one cannot.
A module in the site navigation on every page reads: “Every putter is restored, customized or authenticated in the Scotty Cameron Custom Shop in California.” The Putter Studio itself is described only as being in Southern California — the company publishes the Encinitas address of its retail Gallery, but not the studio’s city.
The dedicated origin article names the Special Select and Phantom X lines, both since superseded, and the current Phantom mallet pages carry no origin language of their own; the Studio Style blade pages do. The Studio Store is a separate matter — a Scotty Crew blanket is “100% Turkish organic cotton,” made with a San Diego partner. Apparel and accessories are not covered by the putter claim, and are not claimed here.
The American Manufacturing label fits a company that mills and builds its actual product in the United States while selling other goods it does not claim. Acushnet publishes a worldwide supplier policy, so components and soft goods are globally sourced. The putters are the claim, and this profile confines itself to them.
The story
Scotty Cameron built and tested putters with his father in the family garage from the 1960s. His father’s parting advice, which the company still quotes, was: “Stick with the game of golf, Scotty. I think you have a future.”
Before going independent he designed putters for Ray Cook Golf, Maxfli, Cleveland Classics, Founders Golf and Mizuno. In 1992 he and his wife Kathy started Cameron Golf International with the stated goal of designing and manufacturing “the finest putters for the best players in the world.” Peter Kostis introduced him to Acushnet’s then-chief executive after the 1994 Players Championship, and the partnership was formed that September.
The Putter Studio is a research facility rather than a shop. It has force plates, alignment lasers and high-speed video in a two-storey vaulted room used for tour fittings, and the company notes that Scotty “still doesn’t have an actual desk or office.” The Custom Shop is explicitly service-only: “we do not sell putters at Scotty’s Custom Shop,” and “The Scotty Cameron Putter Studio is a R&D facility and we do not take drop offs.”
Why they matter
Golf equipment is a global business. Heads are cast in Asia, shafts come from Japan, grips from wherever, and the brand’s job is assembly and marketing. A putter milled in California is the exception rather than the norm.
The company also runs a formal authentication registry and publishes a counterfeit notice, which is what happens when a product is valuable enough to be faked. Keeping the milling and the Custom Shop in one place is part of what makes authentication possible at all.
The honest caveat is about currency. The clearest origin statement is an article last modified in 2023 that names putter lines since replaced, and the current mallet pages do not repeat it. The blade pages do — the Studio Style Newport is “designed, precision milled and assembled in the USA from 303 stainless steel.” This profile records what the company publishes now, not what it published in 2020.

Scotty Cameron questions
Are Scotty Cameron putters made in the USA?
The company states it: “Every Scotty Cameron putter produced has been designed, milled and built in the United States,” and “Each putter is milled in California from a solid block of 303 Stainless Steel.” The current Studio Style Newport page repeats it — “designed, precision milled and assembled in the USA.” The claim covers putters, not the Studio Store’s apparel and accessories.
Where is Scotty Cameron based?
The only California address the company publishes is the Scotty Cameron Golf Gallery at 927 S. Coast Hwy 101, Suite E-100, Encinitas, California 92024. The Putter Studio, where the work happens, is described only as being in Southern California. The corporate legal address is Acushnet Company, 333 Bridge Street, Fairhaven, Massachusetts.
Who owns Scotty Cameron?
Acushnet Company, the parent of Titleist; the brand is “Scotty Cameron by Titleist.” Scotty Cameron’s own account dates the relationship to September 1994, when Cameron Golf International and Acushnet became partners after an introduction by Peter Kostis.
What does the Custom Shop do?
Restoration, customization and authentication — not sales. “We do not sell putters at Scotty’s Custom Shop,” and the Putter Studio “is a R&D facility and we do not take drop offs.” The shop also declines to restore the aluminum-headed models such as the Futura, Kombi, GoLo and Red X Mid.
