The story
In 1970 Bill and Bobbie Whiteside started a general-purpose machine shop in the basement of their house in western North Carolina. The location mattered more than it might sound: they were a few miles from Hickory, then one of the densest concentrations of furniture manufacturing anywhere in the world. When a plant broke a cutter or needed a part nobody sold, they called the Whitesides.
Fixing other people’s tooling teaches you what good tooling is. Over time the repair work turned into making cutters outright, and the cutters turned into a catalogue. Whiteside grew almost entirely on repeat orders and referrals — woodworkers telling other woodworkers — rather than on advertising or shelf space.
The furniture industry that gave Whiteside its start largely left North Carolina. Whiteside did not. It is still in Claremont, still family owned and operated, still making its complete line in one 40,000-square-foot building, and Fine Woodworking still ranks its bits first.
Why they matter
Router bits are a commodity on paper and anything but in practice. A bit is a piece of carbide brazed and ground to a tolerance; get the grind slightly wrong and the cut burns, chatters or tears out. That difference is invisible in a photograph and obvious in about four seconds of use, which is precisely why the category filled with cheap imported bits that look identical to good ones.
Whiteside competes by controlling the grind, and controlling the grind means owning the machines and the people running them. The company builds special machinery for its own production floor. That is not a thing you outsource.
It is also one of the survivors of a regional collapse. Western North Carolina lost most of its furniture manufacturing to overseas plants over three decades. Whiteside sold tooling into that industry and outlasted it by selling to the woodworkers who remained — professional shops and serious amateurs who will pay more for a bit that cuts clean.
