The other half of the story is acquisition. Over the decades the company gathered up a set of American candy brands — Charms, Junior Mints, Charleston Chew, Cella’s, Andes, Dubble Bubble — many of them older names that needed a home. Tootsie Roll now calls itself America’s favourite candy company and distributes worldwide from a base that is still, at its centre, one Chicago factory.
