Lamson is one of America’s oldest cutlery companies, forging and finishing since 1837. Its blades are cut, ground, polished, sharpened and assembled at its Massachusetts facilities from American hi-carbon stainless steel, and its kitchen tools are formed there too — a rare case of a knife brand that still owns the factory rather than importing and branding.

Where Lamson products are made

🏭

Westfield, Massachusetts

Lamson’s factory and offices sit at 79 Mainline Drive in Westfield. Blades are cut, ground, polished and sharpened there, then assembled with brass or nickel-silver rivets and hand-finished.

🔩

American steel

Blades are made from USA hi-carbon stainless steel; the slotted turners and kitchen tools are formed in the same Massachusetts facilities from American stainless.

Hand-finished handles

Walnut and Midnight (black G-10) handle scales are fitted to full-tang blades, with an integrated bolster that suits either a traditional or a pinch grip.

Lamson’s lines do not all carry the same origin story, so it is worth being specific. Lamson states that its Vintage Precision blades use its proprietary USA-made 420HC-LAM stainless steel and are honed and finished in Massachusetts, and that its kitchen tools are formed there from American stainless steel. Its flagship Premier Forged line is different: Lamson states those blades are forged from 4116 stainless steel from Solingen, Germany, with handles of “exotic imported hardwoods.” The company says Premier Forged blades are polished, sharpened and finished at its Massachusetts facility and lists Country of Origin as USA, but it does not state where the forging itself takes place. We have asked Lamson to clarify and will update this page with their answer. A small number of accessories carry no origin statement at all, so check the individual listing if that matters to you.

The story

Lamson has been making cutlery since 1837, which makes it one of the oldest cutlery companies in the United States — the company describes it as forging excellence for almost two hundred years, and it is not far off.

The work is unglamorous and specific. Blades start as American hi-carbon stainless steel and are cut, ground, polished and sharpened at the company’s Massachusetts facilities. Handle scales in walnut or Midnight black G-10 are riveted to full-tang blades in brass or nickel silver, then the knives are finished and sharpened by hand. The same plant forms the slotted turners and kitchen tools.

The company’s roots are in Shelburne Falls, where its factory outlet store still trades on Conway Street; the factory and offices are now at 79 Mainline Drive in Westfield. Products carry a lifetime warranty and free sharpening — the kind of promise only a company that still owns its tooling can make.

Its current lines include the Vintage Precision collection (USA-made steel), Premier Forged (German steel, see the note below), walnut-handled tools, ultra-durable handles, a Brad Leone signature range and outdoor cooking gear.

Why they matter

Kitchen knives are one of the most import-dominated categories in the American home. Most of what sits in a big-box knife block was made overseas and branded here.

Lamson is the counter-example that has lasted longest: a company that has held onto its grinding, polishing and sharpening capability in Massachusetts for nearly two centuries rather than becoming a marketing operation with an overseas supplier.

Free sharpening and a lifetime warranty are the tell. Those commitments only make economic sense if the company can actually service what it built — which means keeping the plant, and the people who know how to run it.
