Its own raw material
An on-site recycling operation processes an average of 400,000 milk jugs a day into HDPE pellets, which POLYWOOD extrudes into its own proprietary all-weather lumber rather than buying board stock from anyone else.

A second company-owned production facility in Roxboro adds capacity on the East Coast. Both plants build finished furniture, not kits shipped in from elsewhere.

The story
POLYWOOD began in 1990 in an Indiana garage with one Adirondack chair and an unglamorous idea: that the high-density polyethylene piling up in landfills — milk jugs, detergent bottles, shampoo containers — could be turned into lumber that would outlast the wood it replaced. Founders Doug Rassi, Jj Alfred and Mark Phillabaum were not furniture people. They were trying to solve a plastics problem.
The chair worked. HDPE does not rot, does not need staining, does not splinter and does not care about rain or salt air. Three and a half decades later POLYWOOD runs one of the largest recycling-to-furniture operations in the country from Syracuse, Indiana, feeding a two-million-square-foot plant with plastic it processes itself, and it marked its 35th year in 2025 by launching a new generation of its lumber.

Why they matter
Outdoor furniture is a category almost entirely surrendered to imports. Aluminum frames, resin wicker and teak knockoffs arrive by container, and a summer chair is usually treated as a two-season purchase. POLYWOOD sells against that on durability, and it can only make the durability argument because it controls the material.
Vertical integration is the reason POLYWOOD is still American-made at scale. When a company recycles its own feedstock, extrudes its own lumber and assembles its own furniture, there is no offshore supplier to chase for a cheaper price. Buying POLYWOOD supports manufacturing jobs in a small Indiana county and in Person County, North Carolina — and keeps a very large volume of plastic out of the waste stream.
