Fiesta is the continuation of the Homer Laughlin China Company (est. 1871); its dinnerware is made entirely in Newell, West Virginia. In 2020 the foodservice divisions and the Homer Laughlin name were sold, but the Fiesta line and its manufacturing stayed in Newell.
The story
Fiesta began life in 1871 as a two-kiln pottery started by the Laughlin brothers, which grew into the Homer Laughlin China Company. In 1936, design director Frederick Rhead introduced the bright, concentric-ring Fiesta line to bring color to Depression-era tables — and it became one of the most recognizable American dinnerware patterns ever made.
Production has run (with a 1986 relaunch) at the plant in Newell, West Virginia, a town the company helped build. In 2020 the business sold its foodservice divisions and the Homer Laughlin name and rebranded its retail operation as the Fiesta Tableware Company — keeping manufacturing, headquarters and the Fiesta line in Newell. Today it makes roughly 3.1 million pieces a year using lead-free glazes and locally sourced clay.
One of the last large-scale American dinnerware makers still producing entirely on home soil.
Why they matter
Dinnerware is a heavily imported category, so a single-plant American pottery is worth celebrating.
Every Fiesta piece supports West Virginia manufacturing jobs and a 150-year pottery tradition on the Ohio River.
