The story
Mountain House was born from Oregon’s Willamette Valley. In 1963, Oregon Freeze Dry set up in Albany and began freeze-drying strawberries; by the mid-1960s it was freeze-drying rations for the U.S. military and food for NASA’s space program. When surplus military meals proved popular with backpackers, the company launched the consumer Mountain House brand — sold first through REI.
More than fifty years later, the meals are still made in Albany. In small batches, recipes are cooked, then rolled into hallways of freeze-drying chambers across a single process of time, temperature and pressure. The payoff is the brand’s signature 30-year taste guarantee — the longest proven shelf life in the category.
Its food has traveled from submarines to space stations — but it all still comes out of one Oregon town.
Why they matter
