Kept in the USA

In a category flooded with overseas pour-and-pack, the core candles are still made in Massachusetts.

Yankee Candle’s signature jar candles are made in Whately, Massachusetts. The brand is owned by Newell Brands, and some accessories or seasonal lines may be sourced elsewhere — check individual product labels.

The story

Yankee Candle started the way a lot of great American brands do — at a kitchen table with a teenager and no money. In 1969, 16-year-old Michael Kittredge couldn’t afford a Christmas gift for his mother, so he melted down crayons and poured his first scented candle. Neighbors wanted one too, and a garage operation in South Hadley grew into a company.

Five and a half decades later, the heart of the operation is the production plant in Whately, where roughly 600 people pour and pack around 45 million candles a year, alongside a dedicated R&D and Burn Lab in nearby South Deerfield. The brand is now part of Newell Brands, but the craft is still hands-on and still local.

A teenager melted down crayons in 1969 — and the company still makes its candles in the same corner of western Massachusetts.

Why they matter

Candles are flooded with overseas pour-and-pack, so a household name that kept its core manufacturing on American soil is worth celebrating.

Every Massachusetts-made Yankee Candle supports roughly 600 local manufacturing jobs and keeps a 50-year-old craft in the Pioneer Valley.
