Manufacturing
Bottles, caps and lids are blow-molded at Nalgene’s Rochester, New York facility.
Materials
Molded from Eastman Tritan resin made in Kingsport, Tennessee; the lifestyle line is now 50% recycled.
Sourcing
U.S. material plus U.S. molding — unusual in a category where many rivals mold the same resin overseas.
FTC note: Nalgene states “almost all” products are made in Rochester, so a small share of the catalog and some accessories may not be fully U.S.-made — but the core bottles, and the resin they are molded from, are American.
The story
Nalgene began in 1949 when chemist Emanuel Goldberg founded the Nalge Company in Rochester, New York, making lightweight, nearly unbreakable polyethylene laboratory ware — the same toughness that later made the bottles legendary in the field.
The consumer leap is credited to a company president who found his son’s Boy Scout troop carrying Nalgene lab bottles on camping trips. Today the outdoor line is operated by Nalgene Outdoor under Thermo Fisher Scientific, still molding bottles in Rochester, and in 2023 it converted its lifestyle bottles to 50% certified recycled Tritan.
Born in the lab, proven on the trail — and still molded in Rochester after 75 years.
Why they matter
Nalgene is one of the clearer Made-in-USA stories in the reusable-bottle category: not only is the bottle molded in Rochester, New York, but its core raw material — Tritan plastic — is itself made in the United States. Many competitors ship the same resin overseas to mold and back. Choosing Nalgene keeps both the material and the manufacturing domestic.
