The story
The company traces to 1978, when Marc Cabot bought and rebuilt a vacant mill in Northfield, Vermont. For years the mill knit socks for other labels, and by the early 2000s low-cost overseas competition had pushed it to the brink of bankruptcy.
In 2004, Marc’s son Ric Cabot bet the struggling mill on a premium in-house brand — Darn Tough — built around extreme durability and an unconditional lifetime guarantee, with everything made in Vermont rather than offshored. Word of mouth among hikers and soldiers drove rapid national growth, and the still-family-owned company expanded its Vermont footprint with added knitting and finishing plants.
A near-bankrupt Vermont mill bet everything on knitting socks at home — and won.
Why they matter
Darn Tough is a textbook case of an American textile maker surviving offshore competition not by chasing cheap labor, but by competing on quality and a lifetime guarantee. It turned a failing mill into a nationally known brand and a major employer in a small Vermont town — exactly the story the Buy American Campaign exists to tell.
